As I See It

Oxymoron means:  Two words that do not go together.
Saltwater Aquarium and Freshwater Watershed

By Donald S. Andrade

Gravity will always win.

The next Mayor will be concerned with the welfare and health of Fairway. Changes planned and made by neighboring cities effect Fairway, at times positively and at time negatively. Storm water projects that create dump and flood conditions down stream and through Fairway must be questioned by more then the Cities involved, the County Storm Water Management and the Engineer designing the project. Fairway must seek out independent advice from outside the circle of those committed to the development.

The announcement by The City of Mission to build a 1.5 million Gallon Salt Water Aquarium on Fairway’s doorstep should have raised major flags to Fairways Mayor. This complex will be within 100 yards of Rock Creek. This aquarium will be built in a fresh water floodplain. Any major leaks or accidents threaten the total ecosystem from here to the Missouri River. Has the Corp of Engineers, EPA or FEMA, Kansas City Mo. or The Plaza complex seen the potential and assured damage once a leak occurs? Salt can not be removed from fresh water.

The news is filled with stories of waste storage pond failure that were designed to not to fail.  The latest examples are coal fly ash storage and animal waste storage ponds all leaking with catastrophic damage.  How much insurance will this aquarium complex carry?

When the Mayor appoints and sends representatives to neighboring committees it is not to applaud and scream “Whoopee Commercial Development”. The changes proposed must be viewed in a sober context of their deleterious as well as positive affects on Fairway.
