Changes made in the watershed increase their severity.

Misguided Strategies for Rock Creek: The Unintended Consequence: Part I
There is and has only been one major safety problem for the City of Fairway. This problem came with the Territory and our incorporation as a City. The safety of citizens is threatened by the Flash flood potential of Rock Creek. The number one cause of water fatalities in America are Flash floods.
Our City government has learned nothing from the three Flash floods of 1977, 1993, and 1998. Fairway’s portion of Rock Creek is the spout at the bottom of the funnel that is the Rock Creek Watershed and our City Government is ignoring and blind to this danger.
All waters from Mission, Roeland Park and Fairway rush through this funnel. The Unintended Consequence of building a huge Highway Bridge was that it also built a flood Retention Pond under the new bridge. As the mass of water fills the Retention Pond and changes the stream flow, it creates a growing backup and force that further endangers our homes and property. Yet, our response to flash flooding was to build an oversized bridge, a dangerous mud/water Retention Holding Pond and more storm water projects to add water faster to Rock Creek. Fairway City Government blithely ignores the dangers to the citizens of Fairway. We need assurance that all that is being claimed by the County and Fairway is true. Fairway needs to hire an independent Hydrological Engineer for review of all the work that has been done to Rock Creek. Fairway is in need of a new and different Mayor that recognizes the dangers to our people.
Common sense tells us, two pounds won’t fit in a one pound bag with a dam at the end.
Most Cities would give their eyeteeth to have the potential of a natural flowing Rock Creek to beautify and raise property values. PresentationIIIA will show an example of this City government’s inability to learn, see and hear the obvious. The present Mayor ruled that no Power Points by citizens can be shown to, or viewed by the City Council. He put plates over the outlets to insure that his ruling would be followed.
